We are not implying that all of the local companies that offer such bargains are in fact attempting to replace or repair things that do not need to be, but the practice is large enough that the nationally televised programs Dateline NBC & NBC Today.com have run several stories on such shady service practices.  This happens all over the country.

Several technicians were cited for telling customers that they needed replacement parts or costly repairs when, in fact, the equipment required entirely different repairs or no work at all. Some even suggested that customers needed entirely new systems when technicians were unable to accurately diagnose the problem.  It's also very common for technicians to work on Commission, with a minimum service call fee.  Some mechanical companies that offer "All Mechanical Services" (ex. Plumbing, Heating, AC, Electrical) will "inspect all your equipment for one small fee of for Free". Then they find excessive repairs, possibly not needed.  We have personally witnessed this with one of our customers that just had a new HVAC system installed and they called out a local "All Services" company who 1.) technicians work on commission, 2.) there was a $1499.99 targeted minimum, 3.) they found exactly $1499.99 worth of repairs to be completed in the house.  They system was about 6 months old and was installed properly and operating to manufacturer specifications.  She was selling her house and the technician was taking advantage of her need to quickly sell her house with scare tactics that she wouldn't pass an inspection.
